Microsoft Edge won’t open? 7 fixes for Windows 11 and 10

Browser logos on a laptop screen, including Microsoft Edge, which sometimes won't open on Windows

Quick answer: If Microsoft Edge won’t open, first end every Microsoft Edge process in Task Manager and try again. If it still won’t start, run msedge --disable-extensions from the Run box to rule out a bad extension, then repair Edge from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Modify > Repair). A damaged user profile is the next most likely cause; a fresh profile or reinstalling Edge over the top fixes most remaining cases.

Applies to: Microsoft Edge on Windows 11 and Windows 10, when clicking the Edge icon does nothing, Edge flashes and closes, or it opens with a blank or frozen window.

Why Microsoft Edge won’t open

Edge is part of Windows, so it can’t simply be missing. When it refuses to start, the cause is usually one of these:

  • Edge is already running in the background (for example with Startup boost or after a crash) and a stuck process blocks a new window.
  • The window opens but appears off-screen, often after you unplug a second monitor.
  • A faulty extension or a damaged profile crashes Edge as it loads.
  • Edge’s own files are damaged, often after an interrupted update.
  • Third-party antivirus or a system-wide problem stops it.

Fix 1: End stuck Edge processes and restart

Two people working on a Windows laptop, where Task Manager can end stuck Microsoft Edge processes
  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes page, right-click Microsoft Edge and choose End task. Repeat for any other Microsoft Edge entries.
  3. Open Edge again. If it still doesn’t start, restart the PC, which also finishes any half-installed Edge or Windows update.

Fix 2: Bring back a window that opens off-screen

If Edge shows on the taskbar but you can’t see its window, hover over the Edge icon on the taskbar, right-click the preview and choose Maximize. Or select the Edge icon so it’s active and press Win + Up arrow. Pressing Win + P and choosing PC screen only also pulls windows back from a disconnected display.

Fix 3: Start Edge without extensions

A broken extension can crash Edge before it shows a window. Press Win + R, type the command below and press Enter:

msedge --disable-extensions

If Edge opens, go to edge://extensions, turn every extension off, then turn them back on one at a time to find the culprit and remove it. Close all Edge windows before you test, because the command only applies when Edge isn’t already running.

If Edge opens but crashes on certain pages with STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION or STATUS_BREAKPOINT, see our guides to STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION and STATUS_BREAKPOINT.

Fix 4: Repair Microsoft Edge

Windows can reinstall Edge’s program files without touching your favourites, passwords or history. You need an internet connection.

  • Windows 11: open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft Edge, select the three dots and choose Modify. Approve the prompt and select Repair.
  • Windows 10: open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select Microsoft Edge, choose Modify and then Repair.

The repair downloads and reinstalls Edge, then opens it when it finishes.

Fix 5: Try a fresh Edge profile

If Edge still crashes on start, your profile may be damaged. Renaming the profile folder makes Edge create a new one, and you can rename it back if it doesn’t help.

  1. End all Edge processes in Task Manager (see Fix 1).
  2. Press Win + R, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge and press Enter.
  3. Rename the User Data folder to User Data.old.
  4. Open Edge. It starts as if newly installed.

If you were signed in with sync on, sign in again and your favourites, passwords and settings return from the cloud. Anything that wasn’t synced stays in User Data.old, so don’t delete that folder until you’ve checked. To go back, close Edge, delete the new User Data folder and rename User Data.old back.

Fix 6: Check security software and repair Windows

  • Temporarily turn off third-party antivirus or web-protection apps and try Edge again. If it opens, update that program or add an exception for Edge.
  • Install pending updates from Settings > Windows Update.
  • Repair Windows system files from an administrator Command Prompt:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Edge opening but showing “can’t reach this page” on every site is a network problem rather than an Edge one; see DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG for DNS fixes.

Fix 7: Reinstall Edge over the top

If the repair option fails, download the Edge installer for Windows from Microsoft’s official Edge download page at microsoft.com/edge using another browser or device, and run it. It installs the current version over the existing one and keeps your profile. Edge can’t be uninstalled through Settings on most Windows editions, and third-party tools that force-remove it can break other Windows features, so avoid them.

Frequently asked questions

Will repairing Edge delete my favourites or passwords?

No. The repair reinstalls Edge’s program files only. Your profile, including favourites, saved passwords and history, stays where it is.

Why does Edge open and close immediately?

That usually means it crashes while loading an extension or a damaged profile. Try msedge --disable-extensions first, then a fresh profile (Fix 5).

Can I uninstall Edge to fix it?

On most Windows 11 and Windows 10 PCs, Edge can’t be removed from Settings because other parts of Windows rely on it. Repairing or reinstalling it over the top is the supported route.

Edge won’t open but other browsers do. What does that mean?

The problem is limited to Edge: its processes, extensions, profile or program files. Work through Fixes 1 to 5; you don’t need to change network or Windows settings.
