Discord No Route error: 7 ways to fix it on Windows

Quick answer: Discord shows No Route when it can’t reach its voice server from your network. Restart Discord, your PC and your router first. If it persists, turn off any VPN that doesn’t support UDP, allow Discord through Windows Firewall and your antivirus, and change the voice channel’s Region Override. Still stuck? Turn off Quality of Service High Packet Priority in User Settings > Voice & Video and flush DNS with ipconfig /flushdns.

Applies to: the Discord desktop app on Windows 11 and Windows 10. The network steps also help with the related RTC Connecting and ICE Checking messages.

What the No Route error means

When you join a voice channel or call, Discord has to open a connection to one of its voice servers. No Route appears under the connection indicator when that connection can’t be made at all, so you hear nothing and nobody hears you, while text chat keeps working.

Discord’s own help article lists it among the errors caused on your side, usually by something between your PC and Discord: a firewall, antivirus, VPN, a restricted network, or a router that’s in a bad state. Each fix below removes one of those causes, so test voice again after each one.

Fix 1: Restart Discord, your PC and your router

  1. Quit Discord completely: right-click its icon in the notification area and choose Quit Discord. Closing the window only minimizes it.
  2. Restart the PC.
  3. Unplug the router (and modem, if it’s separate) for about 30 seconds, plug it back in and wait until the internet is back.
  4. Open Discord and join the voice channel again.

A router restart clears its connection table and often gets you a fresh public IP address, which is often enough to clear No Route. If several devices at home have internet problems, check with your internet provider for an outage.

To tell whether the problem is the app or the network, open discord.com/app in your browser, sign in and join the same voice channel. If voice works there, reinstall or update the desktop app; if it fails there too, keep going with the network fixes.

Fix 2: Check your VPN or proxy

Discord voice uses UDP. Discord says it only works with VPNs that support UDP, so a VPN or proxy that only carries TCP traffic will give you No Route.

  1. Disconnect the VPN and try voice again.
  2. If voice works without it and you need the VPN, look in the VPN app for a UDP-based protocol (WireGuard or OpenVPN UDP, for example) or a split-tunnelling option that lets Discord bypass the VPN.
  3. Also check Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and turn off a manual proxy you don’t need.

Fix 3: Allow Discord through the firewall and antivirus

A firewall rule or antivirus web shield that blocks Discord’s voice traffic is one of the most common causes.

  1. Open Windows Security and go to Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall.
  2. Select Change settings.
  3. Find Discord in the list and tick both Private and Public. If it isn’t listed, select Allow another app and browse to %LocalAppData%\Discord; the program is in the app- folder with the highest version number.
  4. Select OK and rejoin the voice channel.

If you use third-party security software (Norton, Bitdefender, Kaspersky and similar), add Discord to its allowed apps or firewall exceptions too. Turning protection off for a minute is a quick test, but turn it straight back on, and if you’re unsure what’s running on the PC, scan it for malware.

Fix 4: Change the voice region

Voice channels connect to a server picked automatically. If that server is unreachable from your network, a different region often works right away.

  1. In the server, hover over the voice channel and select the gear icon (Edit Channel).
  2. On the Overview page, find Region Override and pick a region close to you instead of Automatic.
  3. Save changes and rejoin the channel.

You need the Manage Channels permission for this. If you don’t have it, ask a server admin. In a direct-message call you can usually change the region from the call itself.

Fix 5: Turn off Quality of Service High Packet Priority

Discord can mark its voice packets as high priority. Most routers handle this fine, but some don’t, and connections then fail or drop.

  1. Open User Settings (the gear next to your name).
  2. Go to Voice & Video and scroll to the Quality of Service section.
  3. Turn off Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority.
  4. Restart Discord and test voice.

If it makes no difference, you can turn it back on.

Fix 6: Flush DNS and reset the network stack

Stale DNS records or a damaged network configuration can stop Discord finding its voice servers. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands one at a time:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset

ipconfig /release disconnects you briefly; /renew reconnects. Restart the PC after netsh winsock reset.

If that doesn’t help, Windows can reinstall all network adapters for you: in Windows 11 go to Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset; in Windows 10 go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset. This removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN adapters, so have them handy.

Some people also fix No Route by switching the PC’s DNS server from the provider’s default to a public resolver such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8). It’s harmless to try, but treat it as optional rather than a guaranteed fix.

Fix 7: Work or school networks

Offices, schools, hotels and public Wi-Fi often block voice and gaming traffic on purpose. If Discord voice works at home but shows No Route on that network, nothing on your PC is broken; the network admin would have to allow it. Don’t try to get around a work or school network’s rules. If other remote tools such as AnyDesk also fail there, see disconnected from the AnyDesk network for the same kind of firewall issue.

If nothing here works, contact Discord support from its help center and include a screenshot of the voice errors from the console, as Discord’s article explains.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Discord say No Route but text chat works?

Text uses a normal web connection, while voice needs a separate UDP connection to a voice server. A firewall, VPN or network rule can block the voice connection and leave text untouched.

Is Discord down when I see No Route?

Usually not. No Route almost always comes from your side. If you see Waiting for Voice Server instead, or many people report problems at once, check discordstatus.com.

Does No Route mean my IP is banned?

No. It’s a connection error, not an account or IP ban. A new public IP after a router restart can help, but only because it changes the network path.

Will reinstalling Discord fix No Route?

Only if voice works in the browser version but not in the desktop app. Otherwise the problem is on the network, and reinstalling won’t change it.
