NVIDIA Control Panel not showing? Why it’s gone and what to use

Two NVIDIA graphics cards side by side, whose classic Control Panel no longer ships with new GeForce drivers

Quick answer: If you installed NVIDIA GeForce driver 610.47 or newer, the classic NVIDIA Control Panel was removed on purpose: NVIDIA retired it for Game Ready and Studio drivers in May 2026 and moved its settings into the NVIDIA App. Install the NVIDIA App from nvidia.com to change 3D, display and G-SYNC settings, or download the old panel from the Microsoft Store if you still need it (it gets no more updates). On an older driver, a missing panel usually means the driver, the NVIDIA display service or the Store app needs repairing.

Applies to: Windows 11 and Windows 10 PCs and laptops with an NVIDIA GeForce or RTX graphics card.

Why NVIDIA Control Panel is missing in 2026

For about 20 years, NVIDIA Control Panel was the place to set 3D options, resolution and G-SYNC. With GeForce Game Ready driver 610.47 (released in late May 2026), NVIDIA stopped shipping it with its Game Ready and Studio drivers. The NVIDIA App has taken over those settings.

  • Clean install of 610.47 or newer: the old panel is removed, so it disappears from the Start menu and the desktop right-click menu.
  • Upgrade over an older driver: reports say the old panel can stay on the PC until you remove it, but it isn’t updated any more.
  • RTX PRO (workstation) drivers: these keep the Control Panel for now while NVIDIA moves the remaining professional features into the NVIDIA App. NVIDIA has said this is temporary.

So if your panel vanished right after a driver update, nothing is broken. You just need to use the NVIDIA App, or the Store version of the old panel.

Check your NVIDIA driver version

Find out which driver you have before you try any fixes:

  1. Open Command Prompt or Terminal and run nvidia-smi. The Driver Version appears at the top.
  2. Or, if you already have the NVIDIA App, open it and select Drivers.
  3. Or right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters and check that your NVIDIA card is listed. If it shows a warning icon or only Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the driver isn’t installed properly; see the fixes below.

If the version is 610.47 or higher, go to the next section. If it’s lower, the panel should still be there and something else is wrong, so skip to fixes for older drivers.

Use the NVIDIA App instead

  1. Download the NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s website (link in the sources below) and install it. Signing in to an NVIDIA account is optional for changing settings.
  2. Open the Graphics section for the settings you used to change in Manage 3D settings: Global Settings applies to every game, and Program Settings sets options for one app or game.
  3. Open System > Displays for display options such as resolution, refresh rate, G-SYNC and colour settings.

NVIDIA has moved Control Panel features into the app over several releases, including per-app overrides, G-SYNC, colour settings and custom resolutions. Exact names and positions change between app versions, so if a setting isn’t where this guide says, use the search in the app. Some advanced users report that a few niche options still behave differently from the old panel.

Get the classic Control Panel from the Microsoft Store

If you rely on an option the NVIDIA App doesn’t cover yet, NVIDIA keeps the classic panel available as a download in the Microsoft Store:

  1. Open the Microsoft Store app and search for NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Check that the publisher is NVIDIA Corp., then select Get or Install.
  3. Open it from the Start menu. On Windows 11, the desktop right-click entry is under Show more options.

NVIDIA has said the Store version will get no new features or bug fixes, so it may stop working properly with future drivers. Treat it as a stopgap and move your settings to the NVIDIA App when you can.

Fixes if you’re on an older driver

If your driver is older than 610.47 and NVIDIA Control Panel won’t show or open, try these in order:

  • Open it another way. Search for NVIDIA Control Panel in Start, or open the classic Control Panel and look under Hardware and Sound. If it opens there, only the shortcut is missing.
  • Restart the NVIDIA display service. Press Win + R, type services.msc and press Enter. Find NVIDIA Display Container LS, set Startup type to Automatic and select Start (or Restart).
  • Reinstall the Store app. Modern NVIDIA drivers (DCH drivers) install the panel from the Microsoft Store. If it was removed, reinstall it as shown above.
  • Reinstall the driver. Download the driver for your card from NVIDIA, run the installer, choose Custom (Advanced) and tick Perform a clean installation. If Windows Update keeps replacing it with an older driver, see how to stop Windows 11 updating your graphics driver.
  • Plug the monitor into the graphics card. If the cable goes into the motherboard’s video port, the NVIDIA panel may say display settings aren’t available. On a desktop, connect the monitor to the ports on the graphics card itself; if the screen then stays blank, see monitor no signal fixes.
  • Laptops with two graphics chips: the internal screen is often driven by the Intel or AMD chip, so some display options only appear for external monitors or aren’t available at all. This is normal for many laptops.

If a driver change leaves you with a black screen, start Windows in Safe Mode and roll the driver back; see how to fix a black screen on Windows.

Frequently asked questions

Is NVIDIA Control Panel gone for good?

For GeForce Game Ready and Studio drivers, yes: from driver 610.47 it’s no longer included, and the NVIDIA App replaces it. The Microsoft Store version remains available for now but won’t be updated.

Can I go back to an older driver to keep the Control Panel?

You can, but older drivers miss game fixes and security updates, so it’s only worth doing if a setting you need is missing from the NVIDIA App. Installing the Store version of the panel is usually a better stopgap.

Do I need an NVIDIA account to use the NVIDIA App?

No. You can change graphics and display settings without signing in. An account is only needed for some optional extras.

Why does right-clicking the desktop not show NVIDIA Control Panel?

On Windows 11 it’s under Show more options. If it isn’t there either, the panel isn’t installed: on driver 610.47 or newer that’s expected, and on older drivers reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.
