“Your organization has deleted this device” (700003): how to fix it

Person working on a laptop, where "Your organization has deleted this device" can appear when signing in to Microsoft 365 apps

Quick answer: “Your organization has deleted this device” (error 700003) means your PC’s registration was removed from your organisation’s Microsoft Entra ID, so Microsoft 365 apps can’t trust it any more. On most PCs, go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, select the work account, choose Disconnect, restart, and sign in to Outlook, Teams or Word again. If you sign in to Windows itself with a work account, your IT team has to re-join the device.

Applies to: Windows 11 and Windows 10 with Microsoft 365 apps (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, OneDrive) signed in with a work or school account.

What the 700003 error means

When you sign in to Microsoft 365 apps with a work or school account, Windows usually registers the PC in your organisation’s Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD). The full message reads something like Something went wrong. Your organization has deleted this device. To fix this, contact your system administrator and provide the error code 700003.

It appears when that device record no longer exists: an admin removed it, an automatic clean-up deleted it as stale, or the PC was reset or re-imaged and its old record was removed. The PC still holds a token for the deleted record, so every sign-in is refused until the old registration is cleared.

First, check how your PC is connected

Open Command Prompt and run:

dsregcmd /status
  • AzureAdJoined : YES means you sign in to Windows with your work account. Go to Fix 4, or ask IT.
  • WorkplaceJoined : YES (with AzureAdJoined : NO) means the account was only added for apps. Fixes 1 to 3 are for you.
  • Both NO usually means the stale registration is already gone; sign in to the app again.

Fix 1: Disconnect and reconnect the work or school account

Person using a laptop at home, where a work or school account can be disconnected and reconnected
  1. Close Outlook, Teams and the other Office apps.
  2. Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
  3. Select your work or school account and choose Disconnect, then confirm. If you see Disconnect greyed out or the account says it’s managed, stop here and use Fix 4.
  4. Restart the PC.
  5. Open Outlook or Teams and sign in again. Windows registers the device afresh.

Your files stay on the PC. Mail, OneDrive and Teams data come back from the cloud when you sign in again.

Fix 2: Clear saved Office and Teams credentials

If the error returns after Fix 1, old tokens are still cached.

  1. Close all Office apps and Teams.
  2. Open Credential Manager from the Start menu and choose Windows Credentials.
  3. Under Generic Credentials, remove the entries that start with MicrosoftOffice and any that mention your work email or Teams.
  4. Sign out of each Office app (File > Account > Sign out), restart and sign in again.

If Office then says it isn’t activated, see Word product activation failed.

Fix 3: Sign in to the app only on a personal PC

When you sign in again, Office may show Stay signed in to all your apps with Allow my organization to manage my device ticked. On a personal PC, untick it and choose No, sign in to this app only. The app works with your work account without registering the whole PC, so a later device clean-up can’t break it again. Your organisation’s rules may still require registration; if sign-in is blocked, ask IT.

Fix 4: Re-join a PC that signs in to Windows with a work account

Person working on a laptop, re-joining a deleted device to Microsoft Entra ID

If AzureAdJoined is YES, the PC’s whole sign-in depends on the deleted record, and this is normally a job for your IT team. Before leaving Entra ID, make sure a local administrator account exists and you know its password, or you could be locked out of the PC.

  1. Sign in with the local administrator account and open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run dsregcmd /leave and restart.
  3. Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, select Connect and choose Join this device to Microsoft Entra ID.
  4. Sign in with your work account and restart.

If your PC is hybrid-joined to an on-premises domain or enrolled in Intune, IT should handle the re-join, as it has to match their setup. Related enrolment errors are covered in device management could not be enabled.

For IT admins: why devices get deleted

  • Check the device in the Microsoft Entra admin center under Devices > All devices. If it’s missing, it was deleted; deleted device objects can’t be restored, so the device must register again.
  • Stale-device clean-up scripts or Intune clean-up rules commonly cause this. Review their inactivity thresholds so devices that are only occasionally online aren’t removed.
  • Deleting a device object also deletes BitLocker recovery keys stored with it. Back them up first, or make sure keys are re-escrowed after re-join.

Frequently asked questions

What is error code 700003?

It’s the Microsoft Entra sign-in error for a device that no longer exists in your organisation’s directory. The PC is trying to use a registration that was deleted.

Will disconnecting my work account delete my files?

No. Local files stay where they are. Work email, OneDrive files and Teams chats are stored in the cloud and sync again after you sign back in.

Can I fix it without contacting IT?

Usually yes, if the account was only added to your apps (Fixes 1 to 3). If you sign in to Windows with your work account, or the device is managed by Intune, IT needs to re-join or re-enrol it.

Why did it happen on a PC I hadn’t used for a while?

Many organisations automatically delete devices that haven’t signed in for a set period. When you come back to the PC, its old registration is gone.
